Wow, this was a great comic to read! I came to know Lilo throught various fanart but couldn’t find the comic until now! Even if this isn’t going to head in the direction i hope, i will still enjoy reading this as long it will last!
*sigh* Seems even my favorite comics aren’t safe from boring “Evil is Sexy” tropes. What a ridiculous outfit. It doesn’t feel like it belongs in this comic at all.
There’s something significant about the way Dawn looks that extends beyond her appearance at face value. I know very well that she’s out of place and it’s impractical. I’m deliberately invoking the trope because it’s one that I personally get tired of as well so I’m taking it and using it to do something I find more interesting.
It’s good to question why she looks like that because there is a reason. She didn’t look like this before, right? I would think after Chapter 3 it’s apparent that Dawn is one of Nigellus’s monsters. He made her. He controlled how she looked. What does his choices have to say about his character? And I can say with certainty that we will find out what Dawn herself thinks of this in the future, so maybe it is too early to dismiss this simply as “Evil is Sexy” at this point?
Apologies for the delay in response, I tend to catch up on webcomics in chunks.
If I’m understanding you correctly, you’re saying she’s following the trope because Nigelius thinks like that. But you write Nigelius, too. Does this mean Nigelius lacks imagination and creativity then? I’ll admit that this would be a unique way of showing it, though it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth (which is entirely on me).
Ehh…It’s not that Nigellus lacks creativity or imagination.
Who is Dawn? She’s Nigellus’s dead wife. Nigellus created a monster in her image catered to what appeals to Nigellus. Nigellus sexualized Dawn for his own personal benefit, because all other appearances of Dawn beforehand she’s been dressed, for lack of a better term, normal.
In so many words, the point is that Nigellus tends to think of women as sexual objects.
So less ‘evil is sexy’ and more the specific character is sexist. Fair enough.
Was it necessary to draw her in a crotch shot pose, though? Or does Nigellus also control camera angles?
(I realize that can sound very antagonistic, which is not my intention, but I do not know how else to phrase it. I pissed off my husband earlier today in a similar manner and I’m just trying to be clear that I’m not trying to be extra snide. My apologies.)
The comment about whether Nigellus controls the camera angles is unnecessary and antagonizing. We both know that’s not true. If you wanted to not come off as snide, I would have probably left that whole sentence out.
But to answer your valid question, I did an upshot to show that Dawn was holding the power in this scene. Jaymi, being on the ground, would be looking up. Dawn, being an archer/sniper, naturally wants to stand at the high ground. I could have posed her differently so we couldn’t see part of her crotch, that much is true, but since it wasn’t the focus of the frame, I didn’t think much of it at the time. Needing to get pages out while getting deployed into hostile territory on a warship stops me from pouring over details for too long, and I spend a lot of time on that frame trying to get it to work with mixed success. I am pretty conscious in the rest of Dawn’s appearances to not frame her in a way that sexualizes her without reason (i.e. focusing on her boobs, butt, and crotch)
Characters that break the fourth wall are not unheard of (and I”m not just talking about Deadpool). Given Nigellus has a whole slew of unknown powers at this point, I wanted to clarify if that was one of his abilities. Perhaps I should’ve been clearer about where I was coming from if that would’ve helped my perceived tone. Truly, I wasn’t trying to be snide.
I probably have been overly sensitized to the presentation of sexualized women in media. The bone spikes on her breasts that would pierce her chest and the prominent, purposeful (to me) showing of her crotch were the two big things that immediately made me sigh when I saw the panel, in addition to the ridiculousness of wearing a bathing suit to battle. But that’s me. My perceptions are not yours. There are a few people I know that would be pissed at you over this no matter what you said, but I believe intentions matter. Thank you for taking the time to explain your intentions to me. I know I’m just a random internet person that you could’ve just as easily blocked, so I appreciate it.
And since you mentioned, thank you for your service. And I’m sorry if I’ve caused you any stress over this.
